500 million hryvnas are planned to be spent on converting Kiev boiler houses to solid biofuels

Million hryvnas are planned to be spent on

Ukrainian straw is a strategic resource for the country. Yet after harvesting farmers burn on fields the equivalent of three billion cubic meters of gas, which Ukrainian government tries to decrease in prices unsuccessfully. Kiev must say "thank you" to Moscow as the intransigence of "Gazprom" company forces the government to develop the national bio-energy sector.

Ukrainian boiler houses switch to alternative fuels. Almost entirely agrarian Ukraine annually produces about 50 million tons of straw. One third of this volume can be used for heating. Moreover, the experts depict the situation with the Ukrainian energetic potential the following way: one ton of straw is 330 kg of diesel or 600-700 kg of coal, or 500 cubic meters of gas.

The country is implementing new power generating systems, working on biomass fuels, including straw pellets. First of all, they are mounted for heating the dwelling sector. Ukrainian agricultural firms could get involved in the process as well by arranging the production of briquettes and pellets, the more so they could be produced on existing feed-stuff production lines.

However, the farmers are still looking at this created market from the outside, at a reasonable price, from 50 UAH per ton, giving a chance to others to collect straw from agricultural land. As a result, less than a half of the resource is used.

However, Ukraine started developing biomass-based power generating systems at the state level, especially as the straw, in contrast to the common coal, is considered to be an environmentally neutral resource, since it does not increase the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, the process of transition to "green" fuel is gaining momentum.

According to the data from the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine, in 2011 the country produced 650,000 tons of solid fuel in the form of pellets and briquettes of wood wastes, straw and sunflower husks. Over 30,000 tons of motor fuel based on ethanol were generated.

The agency allocated 42 million UAH for 45 projects on converting the boiler houses serving social facilities to alternative fuels. For example, the boilers working on solid biofuels were installed in 20 public sector facilities in Odessa region. These are mainly the boilers with a total capacity of 1 MW, they use fuel pellets of wood, sunflower husks and straw.

In 2012, 502 million UAH are budgeted in Ukraine for the implementation of the state program of energy efficiency and the development of producing power of renewable energy sources and alternative fuels. About 500 million UAH will be spent on upgrading municipal heating facilities and the objects of social and fiscal spheres for solid biofuels. It is also intended to improve the energy efficiency in Ukraine at the expense of targeted financial support (325 million UAH) of the European Union.
