General information about Romania

With an area of 238,391 square kilometres and a population of 21.7 million inhabitants, Romania is one of the biggest countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The country is bounded on the north by Ukraine, on the east by Moldova, on the south-east by the Black Sea, on the south by Bulgaria, on the south-west by present-day Serbia and on the west by Hungary. The NUTS III regions of Romania are presented in database map 5. Figure 4 presents the primary energy resources in 2004.

In 2004 the total installed capacity in the Romanian energy sector was 19,626 MW, of which: - 12,640 MW in thermal power plants,
- 6,279 MW in hydro power plants, and
- 707 MW in the nuclear power plant of Cernavoda.

The electricity production in 2004 was 56,482 GWh, of which, around 41% in thermal power plants on coal, 20% in thermal power plants operating on hydrocarbons, 29% in hydro power plants and 10% in the nuclear power plant.
