Market overview - sawn timber in Ukraine
2,266 thn. cu.m. of sawn timber (boards or sawn processed timber} were manufactured in Ukraine. In 2008, which is by 10% less than in 2007 (2007 year - 2,525 thn. cu.m., 2006 year - 2,385 thn. cum).
Sawn timber production market in Ukraine is characterised by the absence of large-scale producers. Existing market players are:
— sawmills operating under the state forestries with an average monthly processing volume of up to 3,000 cu.m. of wood,
— small private sawmills with an average monthly processing volume of up to 1,000 cu.m. of wood.
Majority of sawmills or sawn timber producers, operating in Ukraine, utilise old equipment with a low production output, high level of fixed costs and, as a result, low profitability margins.
Ukrainian export of sawn timber (boards) amounted to USD 139.9 mln. (980.8 thn. cu.m.) for 8 months 2009, which is by 32% lower than for 8 months 2008 (2008 year - USD 272.5 mln. (1,941.8 Source: State Statistics Committee of Ukraine thn. cu.m.). 2007 year - USD 319.7 mln. (2,189.8 thn. cu.m.).
Germany, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Turkey and Moldova are main importers of sawn timber (boards) from Ukraine.
