The use of alternative fuel on Barrow Island sparked a wave of public protest

Use of alternative fuel on Barrow Island

Barros Trading Ltd Company possessing a residential real estate in Barrow, Great Britain gained the permission to set up a boiler room using biofuel as a main source of fuel and natural gas as a spare one.

The Company possesses 320 apartments included in the list of cultural and historical establishments which have been reconstructed. At present only 20% out of a total amount are occupied.

Recently the Company’s management gained the permission for an energy plant mounting with the capacity of 199 kW, which will be situated on idle office premises. The Planning Committee of the Local Municipality granted this permission which was consequently approved by the Royal Commission and by "English Heritage" service. According to the governmental declaration this project will be economically profitable, will facilitate the occupancy of accommodations and it will correspond to the governmental requirements in respect of the renewable energy sources.

However, the local community insists on public hearings about the use of alternative fuel concerning this project and in respect of a new plant construction, which is supposed to produce alternative fuel in the port of Barrow.

Dave Armistead, the local resident declared that nobody bothered to provide any explanations of how the use of biofuel can affect the health of people. "I live nearby, and actually I have not received any notifications. Besides, these are very old establishments where the city authorities intend to set up flues. Moreover, these flats have been abandoned during more than ten years, and it seems to me that somebody simply wants to make a fortune on them. "

Raz Tailor who lives in the neighboring street considers that the companies working in the district should consult with the local community. "If they impart more information concerning their plans then, probably, people could be convinced that there is nothing to worry about", declared he.

David Rosenberg, the holder of Barros Trading Ltd Company believes that the apartments in his possession are not available for living without the installation of heating systems. Besides, he asserts that these systems correspond to the governmental requirements, do not contravene the law on pure air and dispose of the degree of carbon dioxide emissions which is absolutely null, and the noise pollution level will not exceed 30 decibels, which is lower than the noise pollution level created by vacuum cleaner.

"Our company attempts to improve the district so that the people were proud of their homes. We just act for their own good", assures sir Rosenberg.

In their turn, the local authorities have refused to comment the current situation, and have not gone beyond the assurance that all the necessary information is already available in the local press, and that the residents have received a written notification.
