Camelina Animal Feed: Animal feeding trials have been done using camelina meal with a residual oil content ranging from 6 to 12 %. In all cases of beef, pork, poultry and salmon/trout, an omega 3 fat content improved significantly over soybean, canola and flax. The long chain fraction omega 3 of camelina oil is easily converted to long chain omega 3 EPA and DHA in all organisms tested. Camelina oil is also featured in Omega Dog pet foods. The Food and Drug Agency of the United States has approved camelina meal at a 10% feed ration in cattle and Broiler chickens. FDA has also approved camelina meal in swine at 5%. Approval for use in laying hens is expected within days. In terms of cattle, feed use efficiency measured by rate of gain in cattle was 15% better with camelina than soy-fed control beef in feedlot environments. Steaks from the camelina-fed beef were notably better marbled and tender when compared to soy-fed beef. A blind taste panel evaluation of cooked steaks preferred camelina-fed beef 23-3.
