Choosing a solid fuel furnace: 7 common questions

A solid fuel furnace: 7 common

If you decided to buy a solid fuel furnace you will probably have some questions to answer. Let's find the answers together.

1) Which kind of fuel type will the furnace work on?

There are 2 options here: cast iron and steel heating furnaces. Cast iron furnace uses mainly wood while steel one works on coal. Look for the alternative type of fuel in the equipment certificate of your furnace. The level of efficiency factor is going to be less but heating efficiency remains high.

2) Which furnace is more reliable?

Check for the condition of heat exchanger. Steel furnaces are soldered at the factory. Cast iron furnaces are made manually.

3) How much to pay?

The price depends on the brand, weight of the equipment and fuel type. The bigger in weight the furnace, the less the cost of delivery and installation. In this matter, steel heating furnaces are advantageous.

4) Characteristics of furnace capacity

As a rule, when calculating the necessary capacity you should take into account many factors, for example, to heat the building area of 10 square meters and three-meter height, you need 1kW output. But the number of floors of the building, wall thickness, etc also matter. Camera loading for steel furnace is 1.6 - 2.6 liters per 1 kW, cast iron loading hole is from 1 to 4 liters per the same 1kW.

5) Ease and duration of exploitation

The use of furnace involves the process of fuel loading and the periodic cleaning of equipment. Furnaces are made of steel, they contain many flue pipes, acceding to the heat exchanger. There is a lid on top of the steel heating furnace which can be opened easily to clean the accumulated remains. Steel furnace also has a lever on one of its sides to be turned to clean the equipment from the residual products of combustion. Cast-iron furnaces are made up of a small amount of flue pipes and they have a finned surface of heat exchanger. Therefore, the process of cleaning is more difficult. As for the duration of exploitation, it is measured to 10-20 years. This figure allows to determine the profitability and worthiness of this furnace installation.

6) Additional security features

We are talking about the emergency cooling system. With regard to steel boilers, they have a special reservoir inside from which water enters the system. Cast-iron boilers are inferior in this respect because of the constructive qualities it is not possible to install a cooling system inside the furnace. You have to install an additional device that directs water to drain from the heat exchanger compartment, and the cold water flowed from a water pipe. Besides the inconveniences, in the latter case there are chances of heat stroke. As for steel furnaces heat stroke is not particularly dangerous for them. The worst thing for them is that a couple of details fall apart or break.

7) What brand to choose and where to buy it?

It depends on a personal choice, but it's better to buy it from large companies that work as the service centers. The purchase will cost you a bit more than if you are buying the furnace in another place. But if any issue occurs, you can feel free to contact them for help.
