Pellet sales and transportation in the Netherlands

Sales and transportation in the

The pellet market in the Netherlands is formed on all pellet actors individual enquiries basis. The import and domestic supply to industrial pellets large-scale consumers (power production) takes the first place. While industrial pellets export is on a zero level. The non- industrial pellets market used for heating and obtained from traders’ supplies has taken second place.

The supplies are performed by traders and divided into two groups - domestic supply and export volumes. Then, non -industrial pellets import is taken from export and consumption, minus national manufacturing volumes. Image 2 displays pellets dynamic for the period from 2001 to 2008. In addition, one should take into account that no information about wood pellets import and export had been registered until 2005. The information presented here is sometimes kind of industry professionals estimates and has no official background with the data about pellet manufacturing, consumption and sales volumes until the end of 2008. From January 1, 2009, following Eurostat guidelines, all EU members’ countries will conduct monthly-based records for each pellet category.

As for transportation, it is done in bulk mostly. Usually large dry bulk carriers import pellets to harbors of Rotterdam and Amsterdam, from where small river barges send pellets to final consumer, large-scale coal power stations.
