Chernobyl alienation zone may be soon occupied

Chernobyl alienation zone may be soon occupied

Chernobyl alienation zone lies in 30 km range off the station.  Over 260 thousand hectares of this territory have not been used for more than 20 years. The experts of one European Energy Agency propose to use this area for growing crops which later on can be used as biomass for combustion.

According to the preliminary estimates, planting energy crops will require up to 50% of the alienation zone.

Farmers give priority to cultivating rod-shaped millet. Then this plant will be mowed and subsequently undergo processing for later burning.

The implementation of this project is expected to increase twice the production of renewable biomass in the country.

One project on recovery of the Chernobyl alienation zone areas already exists.  The Quasar company offers to build a power station on the basis of solar modules. The total construction cost of solar power plant of 80 MW authorized capacity in Chernobyl is estimated at 250 million euros. 200 hectares will be enough to locate the potential station.

Allocation of vacant land to obtain renewable energy is becoming popular in the world. Not only Ukraine but also Lithuania are going to give their vacant land for cultivating biomass. In its turn, the list of products from which biofuels are made expands.
