New targets in energy policy of the Slovak Republic

Targets in energy policy of the Slovak

Nowadays, the Slovak Republic is aimed to introduce a range of improvements in own energy policy. The future activities are to be directed at the following:

  • To provide secure, comfortable and reliable energy supply along with well-conditioned energy demand. At the moment the energy demand undergoes changes, what means that energy demand from industry is dwindling and energy demand from services and households is increasing.

As soon as environmental protection is of great importance in all the spheres of industrial and economical activities, a great emphasis is laid upon corresponding measures which should be taken in reconstruction and modernization of already existing and development of newly designed facilities.

  •  To intensify the use of renewable and secondary energy resources. The utilization of renewable energy (RES) sources in Slovakia is not sufficiently developed despite of the fact that the country possesses enough technical facilities and natural resources. Currently RES supply constitutes only 3.3% (23 PJ) of the total primary energy consumption in Slovakia, although the degree of actual geothermal energy utilization is 5%, biomass 30% and hydropower 57%. Solar energy and wind power are mostly out of use. According to numerous investigations, the share of RES in the total primary energy supply will increase to about 100 PJ by the year 2010.

  • To provide the fulfillment of obligations, which were imposed within the scope of different international treaties. To such obligations belong the following: harmonization of Slovak energy legislation with EU legislation, fulfillment of the European Energy Charter, legislation in the field of nuclear power, and the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

  • To contribute into making the energy use more efficient and lower the share of energy costs in the Slovak GDP. At the present time a steady trend of decreasing the portion of heavy industry in GDP generation can be observed. This healthy tendency is caused by the growth such portion of GDP generation as from the spheres of services, transport and light industry.

  • To fight with negative environmental impacts occurring during the process of energy production. Among the measures which should be taken the main are: adoption of technologies minimizing pollution generation (“clean” fossil fuels combustion), activities stimulating utilization of renewable and secondary energy resources, etc.
