Ukraine expects record soybean harvests in 2013
As of May 16 Ukrainian farmers has managed to sow 91% of the plan for growing soybeans. Sown areas now account for 1,317 hectares. In general, they plan to take under the cultivation of this crop 1443 ha. For the same period in 2012 was sown only about 1,245 hectares of soybeans.
These data gives grounds for optimism, and experts say that this year we should expect record harvest of soybeans. In 2013, it was not only sown record soybean acreage (1.55 million hectares), but it was also observed recovery of crop capacity up to 1.9 t/ha. Therefore, the experts expect the soybean crop will be about 2,9-3 million tons, which is about 500 thousand tons more than last year.
The total growth of soybean crop in Ukraine is 21% and this leads us to expect that the processing of this crop in the country will increase to 17% (720 tons), which is a record in recent times. It is also expected soybean exports will increase to 22%, which is 1.95 million tons. For comparison last year's figures were: processing of soybeans in the country – 615 thousand tons, exports – 1.6 tons.
President of UAC (Ukrainian Agribusiness Club) Alex Lissitsa argues that the productivity growth of this crop in Ukraine contributed to an increase in planted area. The development of this crop can increase the country's competitiveness in the world food market.
Also, UAC experts note that this increase of crop capacity of soybean was achieved due to the use of new agricultural technologies in cultivating this crop.
All this allows Ukraine to take leading positions in the world in the growth of soybean productivity. Ever since the 2000 annual yield of this crop has increased by 0.68 quintal/ha. Even in the U.S., this figure rises maximum to 0.33 quintal/ha.
It must be noted that soy is one of the main crops used for the production of biodiesel.
