Port of Tyne received £25 m investment for constructing the new wood pellets facilities

Increasing level of cargo volumes including wood pellets import attracted investors’ attention and inspired them for the new project in designing and constructing new purposed-built wood pellets facilities. According to this project the length of the port quay is planned to be extended to increase the berth’s capacity to handle up to four large cargo ships at the same time.

First facilities were constructed in 2010 after increased level of port’s cargo volumes including high amount of imported wood pellets. It happed so because power stations gave up using coal as a traditional energy source and turned to the renewable energy sources such as wood pellets.

It was decided not only to upgrade the existing port quay but to extend it as well in order to support the growth of cargo volumes handled by the port. Also there is а strong necessity to build new purpose-built wood pellets facilities. That is why the buoyant port of Tyne received this single investment in the amount of £25 m with the aim to create new infrastructure and to be sure that the port corresponds not only to the current customers’ demands but will be attractive to all future partners.

By the way, extending the quay line will enlarge the port’s berthing capacity up to four large ships at the same time and give an opportunity to handle the increased cargo volumes. This project also covers the construction of totally new quay with the length of 125m and load capacity of10 tones per one square meter.

‘This is the largest amount of single investment we received as we managed to build first in Europe purposed-built wood pellets facilities. This project will make its positive influence on region’s development and add £14,8m to the local economy during its implementation’, - said Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne chief executive officer.
