Ukrainian scientists announced Ukraine can produce up to one million tons of biofuel in 2015

Researchers from the bioenergy crops and sugar beet Institute from NAAS of Ukraine explained the tendencies of Ukrainian bioethanol market development.

According to the researchers’ calculations the enlarging areas of the doura and sugar beet crop acreage will give Ukraine an opportunity to increase national bioethanol production. Taking into the consideration the climate features and geographical position of the country these sugar crops cultivation is the most efficient. If the harvest volume is 60 tons from one hectare it will give an opportunity to produce more than 4,5 mln tons of bioethanol. So Ukraine will be able to make more than 1,3 mln tons of fuel even if the numbers are low like today and amount to 46 tons per ha.

As for the efficiency numbers it is sugar doura that can compete with sugar beet. This crop grows good in low moisture soil which is benefit for the South regions.  Also it allows producing both the bioethanol and fuel briquettes and pellets.

Unfortunatly the necessary work in increasing the crop acrage is not performed yet even after Ukraine signed the law about alternative fuel types. According to this law the production part and biofuel use should be increased. Besides according the government’s order No 1375 from December 5, 2007 only 12 state distilling plants from 76 in Ukraine could perform the bioethanol production. That was a reason for a disbalance in the production. Also the conversion of other 29 distillery plants planned in 2013 was not implemented.
